Kenny: Dundalk players enjoying themselves

Dundalk boss Stephen Kenny has said his players are "enjoying their football" as they edge ever closer to a first league title since 1995.

Speaking to RTÉ Sport after Dundalk's 3-0 win over Athlone Town, which leaves them top of the table ahead of Cork City on goal difference but with a game in hand, Kenny hailed the efforts of his players, and said they had scored at important times in the game.

"It was a very good display from the players," Kenny said. "Three good goals – Patrick Hoban [scorer of the first goal], he's been terrific this season, and two important goals right after half-time. That really gave a platform to go on and win the game."

Kenny also had good things to say about Athlone, but felt, ultimately, that Dundalk had taken their chance well to ensure they came away with the three points.

"I think Athlone are a good team," he said. "You'd say they still have a strong chance of staying up. They've got good players, and you can see why they've taken points off teams down here. But we played very well tonight and we got the goals that we needed."

With Dundalk having had an unlikely break of two weeks due to Shamrock Rovers' involvement in the FAI Cup, Kenny said the players were happy to be back on the pitch.

"They were anxious to keep playing," he said. "They were glad to get the game tonight. You have a rhythm of playing games.

"We're on again Monday, and we're well used to it. So three in seven now, that's the nature of it. We'll get ourselves ready for Shamrock Rovers on Monday, and hopefully we'll put in another strong performance."

Asked whether nerves were playing a part as the season draws to a climax, Kenny was relaxed, and suggested that Dundalk's balance across the pitch was serving them well.

"The players are enjoying their football. We're defending well – three cleans sheets, we're not really giving up any chances, so that's important, and the goals are coming from different areas ... we want to take that into Monday night."
