Irish fighter Conor McGregor looks to be one step closer to a world title fight after UFC president Dana White revealed that his next bout could be for the featherweight belt
Dubliner McGregor has placed himself firmly in the shake-up for a title shot after his impressive first-round victory over Dustin Poirier at UFC 178 last Saturday.
Current title holder Jose Aldo takes on Chad Mendes at UFC 179 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and White feels that should Aldo emerge victorious from that fight, then McGregor should be next in line for a title shot.
"Here's the thing: If you go down the list, every one of those guys has fought Jose Aldo already," White told UFC.com.
"Conor hasn't. So who do you line up next for the champ other than Conor? Everybody else has fought him."
McGregor had tweeted yesterday that he would be facing Diego Sanchez at UFC 180, but White has now played down that suggestion, insisting that McGregor had jumped the gun with that announcement.
"So Lorenzo (Fertitta) and I went to dinner with him (McGregor) last night, and he said he wants to fight Diego Sanchez in Mexico at 155 [lbs]. I said: 'You're nuts. No way, we'll get you a fight. You'll be fighting soon enough.'
"The kid just wants to fight," White added. "He said him and Diego have been talking back and forth for a while and he wanted to fight him. We basically told him no and he went out and put that on Twitter anyway."
