GAA to introduce sideline bans for managers

The GAA intends to come down hard on team managers or officials who criticise referees or match officials ahead of the 2015 season with the introduction of sideline bans.

Criticism of match officials has been under the spotlight recently, especially given Kilkenny manager Brian Cody's harsh words for referees Brian Kelly and Brian Gavin in the wake of two All-Ireland hurling finals.

Cody escaped a ban after branding a decision by Brian Kelly as "criminal" but after a Central Council meeting the GAA have announced that the CCCC will now have more power to punish those who speak out about match officials.

A statement from the GAA read: "CCCC now has the authority to withdraw sideline privileges from team officials who make derogatory comments in relation to a match official before a game or in interviews subsequent to a game.

"Previously, suspensions were the only penalty that could be proposed in these instances."

At the same meeting the Central Council also decided upon bringing a motion to congress in February, which will seek to force all teams to name a panel of 26 players for all senior inter-county championship games by 9am on the Thursday before a match.

The statement explained: "With the exception of a replacement for a goalkeeper or sub-goalkeeper, no changes can be made to the registered list. The penalty for including a player not included on the registered list will be forfeiture of game.

"Teams will also be required to submit their starting team to the referee and to committee-in-charge at least 20 minutes before throw-in. The penalty for starting a player not on that list will also be loss of game."

The Central Council will also ask congress to make Hawkeye a permanent feature in Croke Park. The installation of the system in Thurles and in the re-developed stadiums in Casement Park and Páirc Uí Chaoimh is also to be prioritised.
