Carl Frampton believes Chris Avalos is a worthy challenger but insists the American will be out of his depth when they meet in the Belfast man's first defence of his IBF super bantamweight title in February.
Frampton's manager and promoter Barry McGuigan confirmed today that the Tiger's Bay world champion will fight Californian Avalos (25-2-0) at the Odyssey Arena on 28 February.
Avalos today claimed "I am going to win, and it will be by knockout," but 'The Jackal' was unimpressed, responding: "I can guarantee I am going to beat Chris Avalos convincingly."
"He likes to run his mouth. A Yank, you know, that's what they're like." - Carl Frampton on Avalos
"He's a bit of a gonch, he likes to run his mouth," Frampton told RTÉ Sport. "A Yank, you know, that's what they're like!
"He's a good fighter. He's aggressive. It's going to be a tough fight. He's the mandatory [challenger] for the title. He deserves to be in that position.
"He's also the mandatory for the WBO title and I think he's highly ranked with the WBA as well so he's a very capable fighter.
"He's a good puncher, with a good knockout percentage, but he's been beaten twice before and he still hasn't fought anyone as good as me.
"That's going to be the difference on the night."
Frampton beat Spaniard Kiko Martinez in September to claim the IBF belt.
He has long been touted as a potential opponent for unbeaten Englishman Scott Quigg (30-0-2), who is the WBA Super Bantamweight 'regular' champion.
Frampton has set his sights on facing Quigg if he gets past Avalos, but is dismissive of the notion it would be a unification bout, as Quigg's WBA belt is secondary to Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux's 'super champion' title.
"I'd love to fight Quigg," said Frampton. "I wouldn't call it a unification fight because I don't believe the title he has is a legitimate world title.
"I've got a world title. A legitimate one. The WBA champion is Rigondeaux. If it was going to be a unification bout it would be Rigondeaux or Santa Cruz [Leo, the WBC champion]. Not Scott Quigg.
"He's got, in my opinion, a Mickey Mouse title. His promoter and his team need to remember that when they're coming to the table to start negotiating.
"They need to also remember that I'm the one that brings all the fans and sells out the arenas.
"It would be disappointing if it didn't happen.
"This fight against Chris Avalos is a much tougher fight but I think the Quigg fight is a bigger one [event-wise].
"So I'm not looking past Avalos, but if I get past him I want to fight Quigg next."
