Dunphy claims Brendan Rodgers has 'lost his nerve'

Eamon Dunphy believes Brendan Rodgers' failings in the transfer market has led to him losing his nerve as Liverpool manager and, as a result, may not last too long more in the Anfield hotseat.

Dunphy was speaking to RTÉ Sport following Liverpool's 3-0 Premier League defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

He feels that Rodgers is a "lame duck" manager now, but that assertion he pointed out was not solely down to the loss at Old Trafford but at how the manager spent a considerable amount of money last summer.

Dunphy explained: "I think it's the people he bought who didn't play against Basel {in the Champions League} last week. Adam Lallana and Alberto Moreno are the players I'm taking about. Moreno is hopeless - £12million was paid to Sevilla for him.

"Once a coach lose his nerve, he loses his authority and I'd have a good feeling he's lost his authority in the dressing room" - Eamon Dunphy

"If Liverpool had played against Basel they way they played against United they'd have beaten them. They'd have killed them. They'd have been 2-0 up inside 20 minutes.

"He {Rodgers] didn't play the high-pressing game last week. He set up the team to play in an entirely different way and that means he has lost his nerve and lost his confidence.

"That's what's going to do for him. He can't make his mind up how best to use the players at his disposal."

Dunphy also believes that Rodgers may now have lost the support of the dressing room and that his job is very much on the line.

"Once a coach lose his nerve, he loses his authority and I'd have a good feeling he's lost his authority in the dressing room," he added.

"I think Rodgers is in the red zone in terms of losing his job. You'd have to give him credit for the first two years when he improved the team and the club. What he hasn't been able to do is adjust to life without Suarez and Sturridge.

"I also think there is a feeling among the old players at Liverpool that he's very fond of himself."
