O'Gara: Sexton nowhere near return to action

Racing Metro assistant coach Ronan O'Gara insists Johnny Sexton will not rush his return after suffering concussion and says the outhalf has "a substantial way to go" before playing again.

It was revealed yesterday that Sexton had been given a medical ban by the Ligue National de Rugby until 14 February, which would rule him out of Ireland's opening Six Nations clash against Italy on 7 February.

The outhalf has not played since sustaining a blow to the head during Ireland 26-23 victory over Australia on 22 November.

He also received a concussion playing for Ireland against France in the last game of the 2014 Six Nations, and has spoken in the past of having a serious concussion seven years ago.

"He has suffered a number of concussions. To what extent and severity, only Johnny knows," O'Gara told RTÉ Sport.

"But everything has been reported and with the new protocol, he is due to miss a substantial period of time, 12 weeks backdated, because of the amount [of concussions] he has.

"But is that open to review or not, is something that has to be clarified, and who is controlling it. Is it the IRB, is it Racing, is it the IRFU?

"At this stage, he's not anywhere near returning to play. He has headaches passing a ball and running.

"That's not a good sign so it's in everyone's interest, particularly us as coaches, to makes sure everything's right before he even contemplates getting back on the pitch.

"You'd have to feel he has a substantial way to go before he's contemplating even hitting a tackle shield" - Ronan O'Gara

"I think one in three sessions is troublesome at the minute, he does two in three sessions with no symptoms, but without doing contact, and that would obviously worry you.

"So you'd have to feel he has a substantial way to go before he's contemplating even hitting a tackle shield."

O'Gara said that growing awareness of the dangers of concussion in French rugby had hardened Sexton's resolve to avoid coming back too soon.

"It's just important obviously, it's very topical in France at the moment and in the Top 14," he added.

"People have been writing to us with concussion cases and some of the stories we have witnessed have been hugely frightening.

"I think Johnny got to see them so he's making sure that he doesn't fall into any of those traps of trying to return too early to play and causing himself long-term damage."
