Real Madrid have told Manchester United that Gareth Bale is not for sale at any price.
United have been linked with a summer move for Bale, who signed for the European champions in a world-record £85 million transfer 16 months ago.
The United board has informed manager Louis van Gaal there is a significant amount of money to spend if he feels his squad needs strengthening, and Bale's signing would be a considerable coup for the 20-time English champions.
But the Welshman is going nowhere, according to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.
"We have not received an offer from Manchester or any other club for Gareth Bale," Perez was quoted as saying on Marca's website.
"We would never listen to any offer for Bale, no matter what the fee."
Van Gaal refused to discuss a potential bid for Bale at a press conference last week.
"I discuss that with my CEO (Ed Woodward) and not with anyone of the media," said the Dutchman, who spent £155m on six new players during his first transfer window as United boss.
United were in the running to sign Bale when he left Tottenham in September 2013 but he opted to move to Spain, where he has enjoyed considerable success since.
The 25-year-old was part of the Madrid team that lifted the Champions League last season and he also won the Copa del Rey in his first year at the club.
Bale has so far scored 11 goals this season for Madrid, who are top of the Primera Division.
Meanwhile, United striker Wayne Rooney has called for a change to the congested festive fixture list before the exertion leads to a serious injury.
The Manchester United and England skipper scored twice in the 3-1 St Stephen's Day victory over Newcastle and lined up again less than 48 hours later as Louis van Gaal named the same starting XI for Sunday's goalless draw at Tottenham.
The Red Devils boss labelled the match at White Hart Lane as "ugly" and a "struggle for life", and with more calls than ever for the Premier League to address the Christmas fixture congestion, his captain was left in agreement.
"It is not easy playing two games in two days and you do lose a lot of the quality from both teams," said Rooney.
"It is difficult. We started so well in the first half but in the second half it was tough and hopefully in the future it has to change.
"It will probably take someone getting a really bad injury from doing it (playing twice in two days), which no-one wants to see, but it is very demanding and I think it does need looking at.
"With the weather as well, with the fans coming from London or travelling from Manchester, it has been tough. It is a lot of money to spend over Christmas as well. But it is what it is, we have to deal with that and have to try and perform well."
