Ireland bowler Tim Murtagh to miss World Cup

Ireland's opening bowler Tim Murtagh has been ruled out of the ICC World Cup through injury and will be replaced by Max Sorensen.

Murtagh suffered a foot fracture in training on 7 January in Dubai, where the Ireland squad are currently based ahead of their departure to Australia for the World Cup at the end of the month, and subsequently underwent surgery the following week.

Following advice from medical staff, it was decided that the Middlesex player would not be fit in time for the tournament, which begins in mid-February.

Head coach Phil Simmons said: "It is heart-breaking news for Tim so close to the World Cup and the squad and all staff at Cricket Ireland are thinking of him.

"We are lucky that Max has been out here in Dubai with us as part of a group of fast-bowlers working with National Academy Manager Craig Hogan, and is well placed to join the squad straight away for what is a tough tournament ahead in Australia and New Zealand."

Ireland play their final match of the current ODI tri-series against Scotland in Dubai tomorrow with play getting under way at 5.30am.
