Cork hurling manager Jimmy Barry-Murphy is keen to banish the memory of last year's trouncing by Tipperary in the All-Ireland semi-final.
After reclaiming the Munster title last July, it was expected that the Rebels would put it up to a Tipp side that had come through the back door.
However, the Leesiders were simply outclassed and played second fiddle throughout in that Munster derby at Croke Park, with the Premier County full value for their 2-18 to 1-11 victory.
A new year offers a new slate and JBM is hoping that his troops can be competitive on all fronts in the months ahead and that the setback of last August can firmly be put behind them.
Speaking to RTÉ Sport after the win over UL in the Waterford Crystal Cup, the Cork boss relived that capitulation against the Premier County.
"It was a very poor display on the day and there's no hiding from that," Barry-Murphy said. "To say that we were disappointed would be putting it mildly.
"The players felt it very badly as well as the management. From a collective point of view, we all have to take responsibility for it. It wasn't good enough and we let a lot of people down on the day. That's sport and these things happen. How you respond to the setback is the key."
Barry-Murphy did, however, reference last summer's provincial title success and the importance of lifting that piece of silverware.
"Winning the Munster title was a great boost to us because the group of players had not won anything up to that point at any level with Cork," he said.
"I hope we can build on that this year, be really competitive again and be up there trying to challenge the likes of Kilkenny and Tipperary.
"If we do get back to Croke Park, we will do our utmost to try and put aside the memory of what happened on our last visit there."
Barry-Murphy was also asked about the proposed changes to the penalty rules that were outlined this week by the GAA Hurling 2020 Review Committee. He was broadly in favour of the change that will see just one player on the line for penalties during this year's pre-season inter-county competitions.
"I spoke to Liam Sheedy [Review Committee chairperson] about the penalty situation and I told him it was becoming a bit farcical with players lifting the ball forward and the concerns arising from it.
"I think what the committee has come up with is a fair experiment that is well worth trying. The key thing is to try and give the team who has been fouled the advantage in scoring.
"I think the change will see through to the championship. I think it will create great excitement. One-on-one is a fair test for both the taker and the keeper."
