McGeeney bemoans 'comedy of errors' from Armagh

Armagh boss Kieran McGeeney was far from happy at the concession of three first-half goals against Tyrone in the Dr McKenna Cup semi-final, summing up the defensive lapses as a "comedy of errors".

PJ Lavery, Shay McGuigan and Sean Cavanagh all found the net for Mickey Harte's side in the opening period as they went on to triumph on a 3-10 to 1-08 scoreline at the Athletic Grounds.

For McGeeney, the defeat has left him with much to ponder ahead of their opening Division 3 league game against Tipperary on Sunday week.

Handing the initiative so easily to Tyrone clearly had irked the Orchard County supremo when he spoke to RTÉ Sport after the game.

"When we look at the goals, they were a comedy of errors," he said.

"Okay, you have to give Tyrone credit for the way they finished them, but when you kick the ball straight to the corner forward and leave your defence wide open after losing possession, then there's much you have to worry about."

It maybe only pre-season, but McGeeney will be looking for his troops to bounce back from this setback against their bitter rivals, adding: "We'll have to wait and see how the boys react the next day.

"They know themselves they weren't good. You know when a team is quiet at the end of the game that they haven't done themselves justice."

McGeeney has run the rule over many players in the McKenna Cup, but is keen to have a settled squad finalised before the start of the spring campaign.

"I think in the four games we had a look at over 30 players. Against Tyrone, Michael McKenna (centre-half forward) put in a good shift in the second half. Sean Connell and Ciaran O'Hanlon also did well when they came on. We tried out Jamie Clarke at full-back. The requirement now is to get a settled squad."
