Niall Moyna: Ireland a third world sports nation

Written By Unknown on Senin, 12 Januari 2015 | 23.06

DCU professor Niall Moyna believes that Ireland is not developing appropriate sport and exercise in primary school children and, as a result, is now a "third world sports nation".

Moyna's stark comments came at the launch of the Schools Fitness Challenge 2015 - a three-year fitness study of 13,000 students in the country.

The study showed a high number of 15 to 16-year-old boys showing early onset of heart disease.

"We're all very much aware that heart disease is a huge problem in Ireland," Moyna told RTÉ Sport.

"In fact, it's the biggest killer of both men and women in Ireland. What people don't realise is that heart disease occurs because are exposed to risk factors.

"These factors would be a high-fat diet, being overweight, high blood pressure and being physically inactive. The earlier you're exposed to these risk factors, the earlier the disease process begins."

Professor Moyna went on to say that in previous generations, "children were more active and they didn't have the diets we have today".

The "third world" reference, he added, can be nullified if a more professional approach is taken.

"I think we need dedicated lifestyle professionals working with our children at a very young age. The solution, if there is a solution, is getting children to adopt healthy behaviours,

"Children are sponges at four or five years of age and they'll take it in."
