Ireland lock Dan Tuohy looks set to miss the opening games of the RBS 6 Nations after picking up a thumb injury in Ulster's weekend win over Treviso.
Tuohy's season has been plagued by injuries, having missed a large chunk of action before Christmas after picking up an arm injury in September.
But Tuohy had made a full recovery and was in contention for a place in the Ireland matchday squad for the opening Six Nations clash against Italy in Rome on 7 February.
Ulster confirmed the bad news for Ireland boss Joe Schmidt as they revealed today that Tuohy will "undergo surgery to repair a torn ligament tomorrow" and "is expected to be out of rugby for up to eight weeks".
Meanwhile, Ulster's Wiehahn Herbst sustained a hamstring injury against Treviso and will miss this weekend's European Rugby Champions Cup match against Toulon in France.
