Eddie Brennan: Jonjo Farrell red card was harsh

While not wanting to take anything away from Dublin's Allianz Hurling League win over Kilkenny at Nowlan Park, former Cats star Eddie Brennan thought the first-half dismissal of Jonjo Farrell was "clearly not a sending off".

Kilkenny's Farrell saw red after 24 minutes for what the referee signalled was a wild swipe of the stick.

The home side were later reduced to 13 men when Joe Lyng was red-carded for a late pull.

The latter dismissal was warranted in the eyes of Brennan.

"I hate saying it about any player but Joe Lyng was a little bit late," he told RTÉ Sport. "I don't think there was anything bad in it but it was across the head and he had to go."

The reaction to the initial sending-off offered a stark contrast, however, from the eight-times All-Ireland winner.

"If the criteria applied to that sending-off had been applied throughout the match then there would have been ten lads gone off the field," said Brennan.

"I didn't see anything in it.  It was a flicking action and If anything Jonjo Farrell was fouled before that.

"I just hope now that this isn't a trend we'll see in league matches where we get some mad decisions before common sense is restored come championship time."

Dublin made it two wins from two in this year's spring campaign after their 0-25 to 3-11 victory over the Black and Amber and it was their first success at Nowlan Park since 1964.

Ger Cunningham's side were full value for it, according to Brennan.

"It was a very good win for them and it's been long, long time since they got a win in Kilkenny. Anthony Daly's team came close in a very high-scoring match a few years ago.

"Kilkenny were short a couple of their very, very key players. Nonetheless, I'm not hugely surprised. I was asked about the game over the weekend and I felt Dublin had a good chance of victory."

As to what might happen for the rest of the league campaign, Brennan feels Dublin are in a good place, though there is still much to play for.

"Not many would have predicted that Dublin would have won their opening two games. They have hit the ground running and their pre-season has obviously stood to them. They're very sharp at the moment. The rest have a bit of catching up to do.

"I felt Clare needed a huge league campaign and now they're sitting at the bottom. As was the case in recent seasons, no team won all their matches. It might happen again.

"Last year, Kilkenny and Tipperary struggled early on but yet both of them ended up contesting the league final. There is still a lot to play for."
