Niall Moran calls time on Limerick career

Limerick forward Niall Moran has retired from inter-county hurling after 12 years representing the Treaty Men.

Moran had initially retired in December 2013 but returned last June to play a part from the bench in Limerick's march to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

The 31-year-old started last Saturday's Allianz Hurling League draw with Waterford but was withdrawn in the 28th minute by manager TJ Ryan.

Moran admits he hadn't been able to reach the standards he wanted and says he didn't want to become "a passenger" if he could not meet the demands of top-level hurling.

"I spoke to TJ [Ryan] earlier in the year and I said I'd play some of the early-season games and see how I felt physically," the Ahane clubman told the Limerick Leader.

"Having played the last four games I felt myself that I wasn't getting to the pitch of where I needed to be at this level and time constraints outside of hurling weren't going to give me the leverage to put in even more time.

"I felt it best to be honest now and not become a passenger in a setup loaded with ambition and talent."

"I could not speak highly enough of the management, back-room staff and players. It goes without saying that I am disappointed in myself that I wasn't getting to where I'd hoped to be but 100% behind TJ and the best group a player could hope to be part of."

Moran won a Munster championship, a Division 2 title and two U-21 All-Ireland medals with Limerick.
