Paul McShane hoping Hull career back on track

Paul McShane hopes he has seized a chance to revive his Hull career after fearing he was heading for the exit.

The Republic of Ireland defender made a rare appearance as the relegation-threatened Tigers grabbed a morale-boosting 1-1 draw at title-chasing Manchester City on Saturday.

The 29-year-old fell out of favour earlier this season and had made just one appearance since November prior to his outing at the Etihad Stadium.

During his time out of the side he was made to train with the under-21s after a dispute with manager Steve Bruce but he hopes all that can now be consigned to the past.

McShane said: "You can't hold grudges in football, it is such a short career.

"You have got to make peace with the past when you move forward. That is what I will do. You never know what is going to happen next."

Asked if he thought he would play for Hull again, McShane said: "To be honest, no, I didn't.

"But there is always hope. You always have to have a bit of hope.

"That is what I have had. As football changes so quickly I have known that, through all my years of playing. You have got to stay ready."

Bruce gave some details of the differences between the pair during his time outside the team after the game at Eastlands.

Bruce told Tigers TV: "You can't fault ever Paul McShane and his attitude on the pitch, he gives you everything he has got time after time. That makes him the cult hero he is, the supporters associate with him. They forgive a mistake because they see the effort and endeavour.

"The problem - and I can understand it - is when I don't pick him he gets a young angry man."

Hull, without a win since New Year's Day, had looked on course for a shock victory after David Meyler's 35th-minute strike but James Milner's late injury-time free-kick rescued a draw for the champions.

The timing of the equaliser was highly frustrating for Hull but the point was still a positive in the battle against relegation from the Barclays Premier League.

McShane said: "I think to concede from a set-piece was disappointing, because we kept them out through open play. So, after the game I think you can see we were mostly disappointed.

"But if they said we were going to get a point beforehand we would probably have taken it. We are delighted with a point.

"There was a lot of stuff in the press about us not looking like a team, but we certainly looked like a team here.

"I think everyone has got to stay together and we have got to show a lot of fight. Every game is going to be a scrap until the end of the season. We certainly have doing it now."
