Clare manager fears players will fall flat

Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald fears his players will fall flat in the Allianz Hurling League relegation play-off against Kilkenny.

The Cats claimed a 2-20 to 2-19 win in Nowlan Park on Sunday in what was a dress rehearsal for this weekend's match to decide which team drops to Division 1B.

Kilkenny's Ballyhale Shamrock contingent will return for the play-off, with the Clare boss admitting it will make their task even more difficult.

He told RTÉ: "Am I disappointed? No I'm not. We were against the wind and we always knew they were going to come back. We made a few mistakes and they capitalised on them. Let's call a spade a spade. They still have six or seven lads to come back in. They are going to be way stronger next week so I'd say they are not quaking in their boots after seeing us today.

"I'm just worried we will be a bit flat next week. It's four weeks in a row again. But in saying that, we'll be putting our best put forward and you never know."

The venue for the game will be decided by a coin toss – Fitzgerald thinks that, regardless of the setting, the Banner will need to raise their game.

"Whatever it is, it is. If we have to come down here or they have to come to us, we have a mountain to climb. We know all their savage players have to come back in and our performance today wouldn't be near good enough."

In the aftermath of the game, Brian Cody confirmed that the Ballyhale players will be back in training this week and "we'll see where we go with that".

He was pleased to see his side win, despite already being consigned to the play-off.

"We weren't about to do anything about our league position. But we wanted to win the game. Clare had a chance to go forward if Dublin had been beaten, although they weren't it seems. It was a good game, competitive right to the end and our lads performed well.

"It was an unusual one I suppose but at the end of the day you are playing for Kilkenny against Clare in an inter-county game. There is always something to play for."
