Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter is ready to prove himself in international football as he settles into life with the Republic of Ireland squad this week.
Arter trained with his team-mates in Malahide this morning and said that years of hard work had paid off by catching Martin O'Neill's eye in being introduced to the squad, but he is determined to scale even greater heights.
The 25-year-old joined the Cherries from Woking and has helped the club to the top of the Championship in England, with two goals in his last two games further increasing hopes of making an impact this week in the preparation for the EURO 2016 qualifier with Poland at the Aviva Stadium.
He said: "I was playing non-league and international is far from that. I was a young boy then and my main focus was to work as hard as I could and get back to a level I thought I could play at.
"I'm confident in my own ability and this is a level I feel I'm capable of playing at. The key to that is working hard and not resting on your laurels. From the age of 19 up until now I haven't done that. I'm going to continue to work hard and hopefully reach the top.
"When I arrived here, the first thing I was looking forward to doing was training. It was a good session. There are top, top players here. I wasn't sure what to expect because obviously it's my first time. What I expected was quality and that is what I saw today.
"There are fantastic players in the centre of midfield, playing at a level where I want to get to. It'll be a good experience playing and training with them. Ultimately it'll be good to test myself against them."
Artur, eligible for Ireland because of his grandmother from Sligo, revealed that the advice from his brother-in-law Scott Parker has been to 'be yourself' in training this week.
"It means a lot. Playing for your country is the ultimate goal in football and when you're a little boy, that's what you dream of. If I do get the opportunity to play, it'll be a proud moment.
"I'm pleased with my form. I'm part of a team that is top of the league and things are going well. My main goal when I play is to be a positive influence on the team and try to be part of a successful team.
"[Martin O'Neill] has told me about the week ahead because I haven't been aware of previous ways of how it works. The communication has been good."
While it is likely to be difficult to force his way into a central midfield role against Poland, Arter is just keen to do what he can to force his way into the reckoning.
"I don't feel any pressure. I'm proud to be given the opportunity. It's one I'm looking forward to and try to do my best."
