Darron Gibson has been ruled out of the Republic of Ireland squad for Sunday's crucial EURO 2016 qualifier against Poland at the Aviva Stadium.
The FAI confirmed on Twitter that Gibson would return to Everton due to a "persistent groin injury".
Winger James McClean has declared himself "100%" sure he will be available for the game.
The 25-year-old Wigan midfielder was sent for a scan on his left ankle on Tuesday after limping out of training, but barely 24 hours later, he allayed fears that he could miss the game as he spoke to the media.
Asked if he would recover in time for the clash with the Group D leaders, McClean said: "Oh, 100%, yes.
"It's been positive news, just plenty of rest, plenty of ice and I should be ready to go. You'd have to chop my foot off otherwise.
"I'm fine. It's a bit sore, but it's just bone bruising. A couple of days' rest and it should be fine."
The results of the scan came as a relief to McClean, who admitted he was concerned when he was forced to curtail his involvement, and he sat out once again as manager Martin O'Neill put the players through their paces at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday morning.
He said: "I was, yes, because I didn't remember getting a kick or going over on it, and obviously that's the worrying part. In pre-season, I did my other ankle, so that was kind of on my mind.
"But I went for the scan and it came back positive and I'm happy with how it came back. Like I say, it's just plenty of ice and it should be okay.
"I spoke to the medical staff and we agreed that it was best just to give it that extra 24, 48 hours extra rest. The game is not until Sunday."
Stephen Ward is struggling to shake off an ankle problem.
Speaking prior to Gibson's withdrawal, Keane said: "Gibbo didn't train, James McClean and Wardy, so those three are obviously doubtful, although I think James is a bit more hopeful than the others for the weekend.
"But we have a few days to play with, so it's not the end of the world."
