Bray chairman insists all players will be paid

Following the resignation of Bray Wanderers manager Alan Mathews and his entire backroom staff last week, club chairman Denis O'Connor has said that no playing staff will go unpaid for the rest of the season.

The former management team issued a statement last week citing a "complete breakdown in communication, appreciation and toleration of our roles".

The statement said the entire management team had gone unpaid and that they wished to "disassociate ourselves with the direction the football club is heading under the current stewardship."

As well as claiming that the team's management had gone unpaid, the statement said that players had suffered delays in payments.

But, speaking to RTÉ Sport, O'Connor was adamant there were no problems with playing-staff wages, saying he had asked the players if they had any payment issues.

"I was at that first training session with the new management team. At the end of that session I went into the players in the dressing room and said, 'Guys, this question is going to be put to me and I want a clear answer. Are there any issues with payments to you guys?' And the unanimous answer was no, definitely not.

"There are issues with the management staff and they are being dealt with at the moment.

"There are issues about payment, yes there are. I've always said I'll tell the truth to anyone. There are issues and they are being resolved but they were sudden issues and as far as I'm concerned we were not given the opportunity to resolve them."

Asked if it was fair to expect people to work without pay, O'Connor said: "That is not the story in Bray Wanderers, everyone got paid last year despite all the furore, and everyone is going to get paid or will be paid this year. There is no issue about that.

"I'm sad it happened because Alan Mathews is a respected manager. He put in a hard stint here last year in difficult circumstances.

"We always said the history book of Bray Wanderers will say surviving in the Premiership [sic] last year was a success and surviving financially was a success so he contributed to the on-field activities.

"The issue is that...let me put it to you this way: on last Tuesday there was no issue, then there was an issue on Wednesday. An issue arose that's not for public ventilation just now but let's just say a demand was made that I wasn't happy with.

"Now I think that can call be resolved. I don't think it's fair that the people who are on that statement to wash that linen totally in public. Let me assure you it'll be solved and solved pretty quickly."

In Mathews' absence, Under-19s boss Maciej Tarnogrodzki took over in a caretaker capacity and despite being down to 10 men for much of their game against Sligo Rovers on Friday, the Seagulls came away with a 3-1 win, their first points of the season.

Tarnogrodzki is unqualified to take the role full-time and the chairman also confirmed that no approach had been made to any other manager before Mathews quit.

"Let me assure you that before Alan's resignation, 100%, nobody in this club had spoken to any potential manager, there was no such thing going on," he said.

"I heard that [former Drogheda United manager] Mick Cooke was at [the game against Cork]. In fact I think I met him that night by accident in the hospitality room, never met the guy in my life [before that].

"Of course, what sells newspapers is speculation so there'll be plenty of speculation but we will do it in a professional manner.

"I got so many messages of support since the win [over Sligo]. I think we might shock people with the number of people that turn up.

"Now if Maciej produces his magic on Saturday night more people might come and that might change the whole outlook on the club.

"What happened happened. Maciej is there as our temporary manager – something good happened on Friday night, I'm expecting something good to happen next Saturday night."
