Frampton frustrated by Hearn's public £1.5m offer

Carl Frampton and his promoters Cyclone Promotions have expressed surprise at an offer of £1.5million from Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Sport to fight Scott Quigg in the Manchester Arena this summer.

Hearn made the offer live on Sky Sports News this afternoon for Frampton to agree to a fight with the WBA super bantamweight champion on 18 July.

Frampton, the IBF champion, confirmed his team are in negotiations with Matchroom and said that the public offer has come as a shock.

Frampton said: "My team and I have been in negotiations with Matchroom Sport to co-promote this fight. It has been made very clear to Matchroom Sport throughout the entire negotiation period that this huge domestic fight can only take place as a co-promotion. It is therefore frustrating that Matchroom have deviated from negotiations with this offer."

The statement from Cyclone Promotions added: "Cyclone Promotions have made several attempts to organise a follow-up meeting with Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport to progress these negotiations. Cyclone Promotions and Carl Frampton are therefore surprised by this afternoon's public offer from Matchroom Sport to Carl Frampton.

"Matchroom Sport understands Carl Frampton is under contract with Cyclone Promotions. If Matchroom Sport are interested in joining Cyclone Promotions in staging this domestic superfight, we recommend Matchroom accept the invitation for a follow-up meeting.

"If Matchroom Sport does not want to meet, Carl Frampton will make an optional defence of his IBF World Title this summer."

Hearn scribbled the sum on a cheque in front of cameras in a clear attempt to speed up negotiations for the bout.

But television remains one of a number of potential sticking points with WBA champion Quigg under contract with Matchroom who work exclusively with Sky.

Frampton meanwhile has been working with ITV and his last title defence in January was the first world title fight to be broadcast live on terrestrial TV in the UK for seven years.

Hearn responded later in the afternoon by saying: "It is not about Cyclone Promotions and Matchroom Sport, it's about Scott Quigg and Carl Frampton. If Cyclone Promotions really need their name on the poster and Michael Buffer to mention them in the introductions, then no problem.

"They are right that negotiations have been ongoing but they ended last week when we hit a brick wall.

"We're frustrated. Kell Brook versus Amir Khan has fallen by the wayside and we want to make sure that this fight happens. We've made Carl an offer of £1.5million to fight in Manchester on July 18. There's no reason why this fight can't happen and we are willing to put the money up.

"There's no offer from them and all the revenue is being delivered by us. We have massive respect for Carl, he's a brilliant fighter that I have worked with in the past.  These are two great champions and we just want to see the fight; let's get it made."
