GAA Digest: Cathal Barrett suffers shoulder injury

Written By Unknown on Jumat, 10 April 2015 | 23.06

Tipperary corner-back Cathal Barrett is a doubt for Sunday week's Allianz Hurling League semi-final against Waterford after injuring his shoulder in training.

The 2014 Young Hurler of the Year sustained the injury during a warm weather training camp in Spain during the week and will have an MRI scan on his return to assess the extent of the damage.

Seamus Callanan will definitely miss the semi-final after deciding not to make any further appeal against the red card he was shown during the quarter-final win over Offaly.

The Drom & Inch forward was sent off for an off-the-ball strike shortly after half-time in that game and subsequently had a one-game suspension confirmed by the Central Hearings Committee.

Tipperary had been considering an appeal to the Central Appeals Committee but have now accepted their star forward will miss the semi-final.

Cork's footballers have made seven changes to the side that lost to Derry for Sunday's Allianz Football League semi-final against Donegal at Croke Park (2pm).

Several of the players rested for that game return, including Division 1's top-scorer Colm O'Neill (3-32).

Cork: K O'Halloran; J O'Sullivan, M Shields, J Loughrey; C Dorman, Brian O'Driscoll, T Clancy; E Cadogan, F Goold; C O'Driscoll, J O'Rourke, K O'Driscoll; C O'Neill, M Collins, B Hurley.

Michael Murphy comes back into the Donegal side after missing the draw with Mayo due to suspension. Anthony Thompson also returns with Hugh McFadden and Eamonn Doherty missing out in a reshuffled line-up.

Donegal: M Boyle; P McGrath, N McGee, E McGee; F McGlynn, K Lacey, A Thompson; M McElhinney, C Toye; M Reilly, O MacNiallais, R McHugh; P McBrearty, M Murphy, C McFadden.

Monaghan have named an unchaged side from the one beaten last weekend for their semi-final with Dublin, which is the second game of Sunday's Croke Park double-header (4pm).

Monaghan: R Beggan; K Duffy, D Wylie, R Wylie; F Kelly, V Corey, K O'Connell; N McAdam, D Hughes; D Mone, P Finlay, O Duffy; D Malone, K Hughes, C McManus.

The Kerry team to play Antrim in the Allianz Hurling League play-off at Parnell Park on Saturday shows just one change from the side that defeated Westmeath in the Allianz HL Division 2A final last Saturday.

Goalkeeper James Logue is club tied and is replaced by Stephen Murphy, with David Butler added to the travelling party.

The team is captained by John Griffin.

Kerry:  S Murphy; D Fitzell, P Costelloe, B Murphy; S Weir, D Dineen, D Collins; J Griffin (capt), P Kelly; M O'Leary, S Nolan, C Harty; M Boyle, P Boyle, K Carmody.

Meanwhile, Shay McGuigan has revealed that frustration with a lack of playing opportunities was behind his decision to quit the Tyrone panel earlier this week.

Patrick McNeice, Dwayne Quinn and Emmett McKenna also left Mickey Harte's panel following the draw against Kerry that condemned the Red Hands to Division 2 football next season.

"It's pure frustration," McGuigan told Gaelic Life. "You're coming home every week when the team is named and you're not on it.

"It's the same boys every week, they're getting their chances and you're not getting yours. I was putting in the same work as they were but wasn't getting out on the field.

"I hung on and hung on. I was debating leaving after the Dublin game, but I hung on because I thought I was bound to get a chance, and when I got it I was going to take it.

"But then the Cork game came and went and there was still nothing. It was really starting to get to me, but there were only a couple of games left so I thought I'd wait and see how things panned out. The Donegal game I thought I'd definitely get a chance, because we were struggling, yet I still didn't get the nod.

"By that stage I had already decided that if I didn't play against Kerry then I was going, because if you're not playing in the league then you're hardly going to be part of the plans for the championship, so I obviously wasn't part of Mickey's plans for this year."
