Former Mayo footballer Ciarán McDonald - in his first ever television interview - says that even ten years later, the pain of losing three All-Ireland finals to Kerry is still raw.
McDonald, widely recognised as one of the best forwards of his generation, was on the losing side against the Kingdom in the deciders of 1997, 2004 and 2006.
"You come back that road again on the Sunday night thinking it will be different again"
Now 40, McDonald still plays senior championship in Mayo with his club Crossmolina Deel Rovers, with whom he won the All-Ireland club title in 2001.
"The results proved otherwise, and we were badly beaten in the finals, but every Sunday morning I woke up for an All-Ireland final I firmly believed we'd win," he told RTÉ's Second Captains.
"I believed we had enough lessons learned, enough preparation and enough talent. You come back that road again on the Sunday night thinking it will be different again."
"It's [still] pretty raw. You'd have a mad illusion in your head that you're still good enough to play inter-county football, with the hope of getting an All-Ireland title.
"They're defeats but they're great memories. It was great to be there. But would it be great to have an All-Ireland title at senior? Of course it would."
