Harrington misses Wyndham cut, Reed leads field

PGA Tour rookie Patrick Reed birdied his final two holes to sit atop a youthful looking leaderboard at the halfway stage of the Wyndham Championship in North Carolina.

Reed, 23, fired a six-under-par 64 to go 11 under overall and lead John Huh, also 23, by a single stroke.

Padraig Harrington (73 & 74) and Vijay Singh both missed the cut and will therefore miss the FedEx Cup Play-offs.

Reed (pictured below) was on fire with putter in hand and was thankful for some favourable green conditions.

"The greens are perfect," Reed told pgatour.com. "They're very true. They're firm and extremely fast - everything that I like.

"I grew up on fast greens. To be able to putt on really fast greens like this, it's a treat."

Huh had a day to remember, carding eight birdies in a blemish-free 62, a round which left him one clear of another youngster - 20-year-old Jordan Spieth.

Spieth was impressive for the second day running, carding a four-under 66 - a notable turnaround after he missed the cut at the US PGA.

"Just five yards here or there at the PGA means you miss a fairway and you make bogey," Spieth said. "So, it's just about getting my confidence back off the tee.

"I think that's been the key to success this week so far...my three-wood. I've never hit it better than I have this week. Same with my driver."

Behind the young trio was a group of six players on seven under, including first-round joint leader Ross Fisher.

After his fine opening round, Fisher could manage only a 69 and had to be content with a share of fourth, alongside Bob Estes, Rory Sabbatini, Brian Harman, Jim Herman and Charlie Wi, who carded a 65.

Defending champion Sergio Garcia hit a level-par 70 to sit five under, alongside Zach Jonson.
