Ryan indicates he wants to return to Waterford job

Michael Ryan has strongly indicated that he will put his name forward for another term as Waterford hurling manager.

Waterford were beaten in the Munster championship by Clare, and exited the All-Ireland qualifier series after losing to Kilkenny after extra-time.

Ryan announced on Sunday that he would not be seeking to continue as manager.

It later emerged that that decision came on foot of a players' meeting. At that meeting, Ryan was informed that a majority of players had voted against him continuing by an 18-10 margin.

A Waterford County Board statement on Tuesday said that the position of manager was open to all interested parties, including Ryan should he wish to put his name forward.

Speaking to Marty Morrissey on RTÉ Sport's Championship Matters, Ryan said he was "very surprised and very disappointed" about the outcome of the meeting.

Commenting on the possibility he might seek the role for another term, Ryan said he had been contacted by a wide range of people who had encouraged him to go for the job.

He said: "A lot of people are contacting me asking me to put my name in the hat again. I'm going to think about it over the next week or so and I wouldn't rule anything in or out."

Asked if he wanted the job, Ryan added: "Of course I want this job. I think I have something to offer, and I think I had a decent reign. I have a different style of management to other people. I believe in assembling a good backroom team and delegating.

"I think I have a lot to offer, and going forward I hope to be involved in Waterford hurling in future. I will have a serious look at it and we will see what happens."
