West Brom's Anelka given compassionate leave

West Brom striker Nicolas Anelka has been given permission to miss Saturday's Premier League clash with Everton on "compassionate grounds.".

Reports have emerged revealing that Anelka - who has played just one competitive match for the Baggies - walked out of training today and told staff that he might retire.

A statement on West Brom's official website read: "The club have excused the striker from club duty on compassionate grounds."

The club has been unavailable for further comment.

The former Arsenal and Chelsea striker only joined West Brom this summer and made his league debut for the club in their opening 1-0 defeat to Southampton last weekend.

The 34-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus, when his big-money move to Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua turned sour.
