Paddy Barnes and Tommy McCarthy have progressed to the last 16 of the World Boxing Championshipsin Kazakhstan.

Belfast boxer Barnes, fighting at a heavier weight for this tournament, beat Serbia's Milos Baltic 29-28 29-28 30-27.

Speaking ringside to Olympic silver medallist Kenneth Egan after the bout, Barnes said: "It was the first time without the headgear on and it felt really, really strange. And there was a clash of heads and it felt really, really weird.

"I'm happy to get the three rounds in. Now I know what it's all about and we'll push on from here."

And Barnes, who pushed up from light-flyweight to flyweight said he felt strong at the new weight.

"I might not be the biggest but I'm the strongest," added Barnes, who also confirmed that there was no real damage from the clash of head. "It's just a nick, just a graze."

McCarthy won 30-27, 28-29, 29-28 against Samir El-Mais of Canada.

He said: "I feel brilliant, I knew had more ability but I knew he was going to be a workhorse and I had to work hard for it. I'm delighted to be in the last 16, it's my first seniors at the world so it's great to win two fights."

Ray Molette was beaten in his last-32 bout against Ermek Sakenov from Kyrgystan.

The light welterweight from Mayo lost all three rounds as Sakenov took the contest 30-27 30-27 30-27
