Fitzgerald concerned over second-half let-up

Allianz Hurling League table toppers Clare will have to become more ruthless, according to boss Davy Fitzgerald.

The All-Ireland champions beat Waterford on Sunday to claim their third win of the campaign but, having led by 23 points at the break, lost the second period by 0-16 to 1-03.

Ahead of Sunday's home tie with second-placed Galway, Fitzgerald told RTÉ Sport: "We played good stuff in the first half, moved the ball around nicely. I just don't think they were quick off the mark, maybe they gave us too much space.

"My only concern is they absolutely beat us hands down in the second half, I wasn't happy with that. But first half, we played well, really well."

Derek McGrath, the Waterford manager, took defeat on the chin but added they were some positives to be taken for the Déise, who travel to Kilkenny on Sunday.

He said: "Look, [it's] a chastening experience for all involved, an education for managers and players.

"We hope we'll learn from it, plenty of positives from the second half.  I suppose we have to take cognisance of the second half performance and drive on for Sunday week."

Live coverage and updates of all the day's action on Sunday Sport from 14:00 on Sunday 23 March on RTÉ Radio 1, RTÉ RnaG and RTÉ.ie (Worldwide). Television highlights on League Sunday from 19:30 on RTÉ Two and RTE.ie (Ireland only).
