Republic of Ireland international Paul Green has joined Championship side Rotherham United on a free transfer from Leeds United.

Midfielder Green, who has 20 Ireland caps and spent the end of last season at loan to Ipswich Town, told the club's website: "The club is ambitious and I wanted to be part of that.

"It is exciting times here with the stadium and promotions, there seems to be a real buzz around the place.

"I think if we can take that into next season then I think we can surprise a few teams."

Meanwhile, fellow Ireland internationals Daryl Murphy and Stephen Hunt have extended their contracts at Ipswich under former national team boss Mick McCarthy.

Murphy, who scored 13 goals last season, has signed a deal to keep him at Portman Road until the summer of 2016, while Hunt has signed a one-year deal.

Former Ireland international Stephen Gleeson and fellow Dubliner Gavin Gunning have joined Birmingham City from MK Dons and Dundee United respectively.

Elsewhere, Leeds United's new owner Massimo Cellino has instructed head coach Dave Hockaday not to select goalkeeper Paddy Kenny because his birthday falls on 17 May.

The Italian is said to believe that the number 17 is unlucky, and the Guardian reported that he also has issues with the 36-year-old's weight.

Leeds have gone on a pre-season trip to Italy and the former Ireland keeper has been left at home.
