The 2014 World Cup saw some spectacular goals. Here are our favourites - in no particular order.

Robin van Persie (NETHERLANDS v Spain) The most remarkable headed effort that you are likely to see this year - or any year. The Dutch striker spotted the keeper off his line as he raced to get on the end of Daley Blind's searching long ball. And RVP takes a mouthful of turf for his efforts, with a face-plant after scoring. 

Goal: Spain 1-1 Netherlands

Tim Cahill (AUSTRALIA v Netherlands) They are calling it the Marco van Basten effort of this World Cup and it is certainly in that ball-park. Cahill hit the sweetest volley after watching the ball travel 40 yards in the air. The Aussie striker connected with the ball perfectly with his left foot, the volley flying in off the underside of the bar. 

Goal: Australia 1-1 Netherlands

Eduardo Vargas (CHILE v Spain) A team goal of top quality passing against the world champions, Vargas was on hand to finish it off, but the build-up play, decision-making and passing accuracy make it a world-class goal. 

Goal: Spain 0-1 Chile

Lionel Messi (ARGENTINA v Bosnia-Herzegovina) The little master burst into life when Argentina needed him most as his team were struggling in their opening encounter. Messi embarked on one of his typical mazy runs before hitting an unstoppable effort past the goalkeeper.

Goal: Argentina 2-0 Bosnia Herzegovina

Gervinho (IVORY COAST v Colombia) A fine individual effort from the Ivory Coast striker, who skipped past three Colombia players before crashing the ball home past the keeper at his near post.

Goal: Colombia 2-1 Ivory Coast

Jorge Valdivia (CHILE v Australia) Wrapped up Chile's opening victory with a superb effort from the edge of the box to the top corner, with a fine square pass in the build-up to set up the goal.

Goal: Chile 2-0 Australia

Arjen Robben (NETHERLANDS v Spain) The flying Dutchman makes it into the top 10 for his turn of blistering pace to make up five yards and beat Sergio Ramos to the ball before keeping a cool head to smash the ball past the two defenders on the line.

Goal: Spain 1-5 Netherlands

Wayne Rooney (ENGLAND v Uruguay) Started by a fantastic turn by Daniel Sturridge, this excellent team goal from England was the first World Cup goal ever scored by Wayne Rooney. His - and England's - joy was short lived though...

Goal: Uruguay 1-1 England

Luis Suarez (URUGUAY v England) Not just a great finish but a example of two club-mates linking up to replicate their domestic form on the international stage. Take a bow for that assist, Stevie G.

Goal: Uruguay 2-1 England

Mario Gotze (GERMANY v Argentina) The goal that won it all. And a worthy winner it was too. Germany took the lead with just over five minutes to play of extra time in the World Cup final - Schuerrle sent an inch-perfect cross into the arriving Goetze, who takes a touch on his chest before arching his body to volley the ball past Romero. Superb.

Goal: Germany 1-0 Argentina

Claudio Marchisio (ITALY v England) A fine strike to put Italy ahead in their clash with England but we're really paying homage to Andrea Pirlo for his vision to step over the well-worked corner and leave Marchisio in acres of space to smash the ball home. 

Goal: England 0-1 Italy

Keisuke Honda (JAPAN v Ivory Coast) This makes the top 10 for the quality of the strike - with a player of Honda's quality there is always a chance of scoring a goal against the run of play. 

Goal: Ivory Coast 0-1 Japan

James Rodriguex (COLOMBIA v Uruguay) Rodriguez' opener against Uruguay confirmed him as one of the players of the tournament. After a bit of head tennis on the edge of the Uruguayan box, the ball arched towards Rodriguez, 25 metres out. He had the presence of mind to glance over his shoulder to check the positioning of the Uruguayan goalkeeper before chesting the ball down and, in one fluid movement, turning and firing a left-foot volley in off the underside of the crossbar.

Goal: Colombia 1-0 Uruguay

David Villa (SPAIN v Australia) A brief flourish from Spain before their early departure from Brazil. Started with a superb pass from Andreas Iniesta - the goal itself was pure class from David Villa, who deftly backheeled the cross into the net to give the reigning champions an early lead. 

Goal: Australia 0-1 Spain

Lionel Messi (ARGENTINA v Iran) With 90 minutes played, the frustrated Argentines were being held to a goalless draw in Belo Horizonte by supposedly one of the weakest teams at the tournament. They had enjoyed 76% of the possession but managed only four shots on target. Enter Messi, who dropped his shoulder on the edge of the box, jinked past a defender and fired a gorgeous curling left-foot shot into the far corner of the Iranian net.

Goal: Argentina 1-0 Iran

David Luiz (BRAZIL v Colombia) Brazil were leading 1-0 in the 69th minute of their quarter-final against Colombia when James Rodriguez tripped Brazilian striker Hulk 30 metres from goal in a central position. Centre-back David Luiz stepped up and fired the free-kick into the top left-hand corner of the Colombian net to seal an eventual 2-1 victory.

Goal: Brazil 2-0 Colombia
