Kerr: Belief now part of Dundalk armoury

Ex-Ireland boss Brian Kerr says Dundalk's penchant for late goals can give them the "belief" needed to claim the Premier Division title.

The Lilywhites lead Cork City by four points at the top of the SSE Airtricity table, and have scored three late goals in their last three games to beat the Leesiders and Limerick, and draw with Sligo Rovers, earning seven points along the way.

"You often hear the word 'belief' bandied about, like it's easy to buy belief, like you can buy a bag of it in the shop," Kerr said on RTÉ's Soccer Republic.

"Belief only comes in sport when you've achieved things regularly.

"That's my understanding of belief, and when you've got late goals on a regular basis in a match then it becomes part of the team's armoury that you say, 'We know we can get a goal, we've the belief', and that's what Dundalk are doing.

"Teams with confidence and with a good squad of players and with a very, very positive manager [Stephen Kenny] will go for it till the end.

"With Patrick Hoban in the team they are always likely to conjure up a goal, from him or from a set-piece situation."

Dundalk play Galway in the FAI Cup third round on Friday evening, while their next league assignment is at home to Bohemians on 29 August.
