Greetings from a soggy Brisbane.

I'm beginning to think I've made a poor decision.

The initial plan was to stay in New Zealand for a week or so after Ireland's win over the West Indies last Monday, but I decided instead to head to Brisbane and take in some of the delights of Queensland.

Big mistake.

Cyclone Marcia, at one stage a category five storm, has slammed into the coast depositing some 400mm of rain (16 inches in old money) onto some regions, wreaking havoc not just with people's lives and homes, but to sporting events as well.

Brisbane escaped the worst of the storm, weakening as it travelled south into a tropical storm, but it has rained non-stop now since Wednesday in the city.

Horizontal downpours causing localised flooding affected the World Cup game between Australia and Bangladesh, and the A league football tie involving Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City that was due to take place at the Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

I had intended to go to both, but the rain had its say. Not to worry. The local horse race track meeting would surely be going ahead at the impressive local Brisbane Racing Club Course, not far from where we are staying.

The racing Queensland stewards declared that the race meeting would be cancelled after 127mm of rainfall was recorded on the track.

What resulted though was a 'phantom meeting' (races on a big screen from other venues) with the event relocated to the comfort of the undercover Champions Bar and Grandstand.

You see, there was a nine-day gap between Ireland's opening game in Nelson and their second game against the UAE here in Brisbane next Wednesday, and the goings-on in the city looked appealing, so I reversed my original plans and headed to North East Australia. Then came the rain and lots of it.

There is some respite coming, however ,and even though it's continuing to hammer it down in Brisbane, the system is heading south now and we should be okay for next Wednesday, although there is the threat of showers during the week.

The squad are continuing their preparations, indoors at the Alan Border Cricket Club, quite close to where we are located and speaking to some of the squad on Friday. They seem at ease and relaxed.

The players are happy to have a break ahead of the UAE game next week, letting the excitement of the West Indian victory subside.

This down time won't last of course, and after the UAE game it will be full-on with a heap of travelling for the remaining four pool games, and who knows, a quarter-final.

But as I sit in my lodgings in Clayfield, just outside Brisbane, looking out at the hammering rain, I'm beginning to think that I should have stayed in New Zealand.

Hindsight eh - it's such an exact science!
