O'Connor: Leinster must be more ruthless

Leinster head coach Matt O'Connor said he was frustrated by disruption caused by the Six Nations, but offered no excuses for a less than convincing bonus point Guinness Pro12 win over Zebre.

Sean Cronin's last-gasp try ensured Leinster secured a bonus point that had looked like eluding them for long periods of Friday's game, but it came after a performance that featured a number of basic errors.

Leinster had a number of players reutrn to the province from the Ireland camp, and also a tight time-gap between their loss last Sunday to the Dragons and the visit Zebre, and O'Connor admitted it been difficult preparation for the game.

"It was a tough week," O'Connor told RTÉ Sport. "We had a lot of guys away who came back to us yesterday [Thursday], and, you know, a five-day turn around, which was tough.

"But we were inaccurate, and we made too many errors, and we need to be better than that."

O'Connor suggested that his players had approached the game with the right mindset, but needed to make more of the opportunities that presented themselves.

"It wasn't an attitude thing. I thought the effort was really good. I thought we tried to play in the right areas, and we got pay off that.

"We just didn't execute in the first half. We got a couple of opportunities that you've just got to score tries from, and that changes the dynamic, and changes the confidence, probably, that we were lacking a little bit as we went into half-time.

"But the intent and the effort and attitude, second half, was better, in the early stages of the second half, and I think we got the pay out of that.

"We've got to be more disciplined with the ball. We've got to make that we execute better, and we don't cough up the ball like we did tonight."

Two tries early in the second half meant the result had not looked like being in doubt, O'Connor said, but it was regrettable that it had taken Leinster so long to secure the fifth point.

"It was disappointing that through that middle part of the game, where we did some some very good things, we just weren't ruthless enough to just keep going, to just keep building the good things on the good things on the good things, and get over the line.

"That's where we've got a little bit of growth in us: in relation to really putting teams to the sword when we're doing good things."

O'Connor admitted that it was frustrating to lose players to international duty during the period of the Six Nations championship, and said it was disruptive.

"You've got blokes in and out of the environment, and they have to split their attention and their focus across a couple of different environments, and that's hard. But at the same time, it's not an excuse for a lot of things that went on tonight."
