Republic of Ireland midfielder Darron Gibson is likely to miss the remainder of the season after breaking a metatarsal which ruled him out of Everton's Premier League game against Southampton at Goodison Park today.
The former Manchester United player was replaced by Gareth Barry, returning from suspension, for the clash against the Saints.
Gibson's foot injury comes after he withdrew from Martin O'Neill's Ireland squad with a nagging groin injury ahead of last weekend's Euro 2016 qualifier against Poland, which ended in a 1-1 draw at the Aviva Stadium.
The 27-year-old will now be in a battle to be fit for Ireland's Euro qualifier against Scotland in Dublin on 13 June, which is preceded by the friendly against England on 6 June.
Although, according to Everton, Gibson may not need surgery but is likely to face a prolonged healing period.
